On this date in 1920 the “father of black baseball”Andrew “Rube’ Foster founded the Negro National League, now known as the most substantial Negro Baseball League in history. According to The Source Foster who created this league acquired 24 black baseball teams, which included teams such as the Detroit Stars, Chicago Giants, and Birmingham Black Barons just to mention a few.
Foster and other team owners who sat and created the league at a local YMCA in Kansas City, Mo are now viewed as pioneers that created the first ever stable baseball organization for people of color. The league which continued existence for years to come eventually saw growth in 1924 as teams from all over the country kept forming and expanding the league.
Notable players that benefited from the birth of the Negro National League such as Jackie Robinson would never have had this opportunity without the showed bravery of Andrew “Rube” Foster.
